Will CBD Get You High?

by in CBD Information October 7, 2019

If you live in America, you’ve probably seen the advertisements for CBD. CBD was legalized with the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, and as a result, the product has exploded in popularity. Millions of users and some published evidence has shown that CBD may be helpful at addressing multiple physical or emotional challenges.

One of the reasons that CBD was illegal for so long was because the drug is a product of the cannabis plant, just like marijuana. However, there was a misconception – one which has largely been corrected – that CBD was a marijuana-like drug. While there are some similarities (marijuana also comes from the cannabis plant), the two are not the same.

Among the many differences: CBD will not get you high.

The Difference Between CBD And Marijuana

There are multiple differences between marijuana and CBD. Chief among them is THC content. THC is short for tetrahydrocannabinol, which is 1 of the 113 types of cannabinoids which are found in the cannabis plant. THC is the chemical compound in marijuana which actually gets a person high.

THC is found in large doses in marijuana, with some marijuana strains containing large amounts of THC. However, THC is found in lesser doses in CBD, with legal CBD in America containing anywhere from no THC to .3% THC. As a result of this key difference, CBD will not result in any high.

Sedative Effects of CBD

That is not to say that CBD will have no impact on you or your state of mind. Many users, and at least one study, have reported that CBD has sedative-like effects. As a result, they feel calmer and less anxious. Others have noted that CBD helps to relieve the negative feelings associated with stress.

Furthermore, there are some reports which indicate that CBD can make the effects of sedatives stronger. Again, this will not produce a high sensation, but it may produce a sensation that is relaxing.

Drug Testing

While CBD will not get you high, that doesn’t mean that you will test negative for marijuana on a drug test. This depends on whether the CBD was derived from hemp or marijuana. Marijuana based CBD will almost always have some detectable amount of THC that might make you test positive on a drug test. Hemp derived CBD has little to almost no THC in it therefore you should never test positive if you are using CBD that has been derived from industrial hemp.
