Is CBD Oil Legal in Yemen?

by in International Law October 4, 2019

Yemen is an Arab country on the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula in Western Asia. Unlike other countries in the region, Yemen’s border is almost all constituted by long stretches of coastline along the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea. Yemen represents a strategic location for much of the Middle East’s drug smuggling and transnational criminal routes.

Typically, smugglers come up from the horn of Africa and onto the Yemen coastline in the dead of night, carrying tonnes of narcotics and soft substances like cannabis. Although Yemen isn’t a strong producer of cannabis, and the country has exceedingly low rates of use of THC compounds, drug use is very harshly penalized in the country.

Is CBD Oil Allowed in Yemen?

The earliest known use of cannabis and hemp in Yemen dates back to the Rasulid Dynasty in the earth thirteenth century. Hemp constituted one of Yemen’s earliest exports to other West Asian regions and along the Golden Crescent. Now, Yemen is the primary supplier of all illicit substances headed towards Saudi Arabia.

In 2007, almost 1 percent of the world’s cannabis supply flowed through Yemen, comprising .5 percent of the cannabis seized annually. Considering that the country is so small, cannabis became one of Yemen’s largest exports in a surprising turn of events.

Both cannabis and hemp are completely illegal for both recreational and medical use. Most of Yemen’s drug policies tie back into Sharia law, which mandates strict punishment for anyone found using or “encouraging others to use” illicit substances.

Consumers should not import CBD – even if it’s derived from industrially certified hemp – into Yemen. The country does not have a strong, consistent history of fair criminal justice processes.

What are the Benefits of Regular CBD Oil Use?
