Is CBD Oil Legal In Vietnam?
Vietnam is the easternmost country on the Indochina Peninsula. With over 100 million residents, Vietnam is one of the most populous countries in the world. Sharing a border with China to the north, Cambodia and Laos to the west, Vietnam is no stranger to its fair share of drug trafficking, domestic drug abuse, and drug related violence problems.
Under the Vietnamese penal code, anyone caught with minimal amounts of narcotic drugs could technically face the death penalty, regardless of the amount and intent of the possessor. Although this punishment is rare, Vietnam’s laws make it one of the strictest countries in the world in regards to substance use policies.
Is CBD Oil Allowed In Vietnam?
Marijuana and hemp are both illegal for recreational and medical use in Vietnam. Despite being illegal, hemp is well known and cultivated extensively all along the peninsula. In the mid twentieth century, the government of Vietnam publicly condemned the use and abuse of substances containing even minimal amounts of THC. Local chiefs were instructed to prevent the continued cultivation of hemp and marijuana throughout the country.
Since then, the government has systematically destroyed cannabis and hemp crops. The economic position of cannabis was only bolstered during the Vietnam war; soldiers created a surge in demand for the substance, with over 29 percent of American troops reporting that they’d used marijuana at least once while in the country.
The government has had a hard time enforcing the law despite locals’ brazen disregard for the threat of extreme penalties. Many locals have turned to smuggling or illicit cultivation in order to make money for their communities and families. Hemp is considered “green gold” and sells around 30 to 60 times more per acre than comparable food crops.
Travelers should not bring any CBD treatment into Vietnam, even if it is crafted using only industrially certified hemp. Vietnam does not hesitate to imprison foreigners who travel into the country with illicit substances.
