Is CBD Oil Legal in Venezuela?

by in International Law October 4, 2019

Venezuela is a country on the northern coast of Southern America, consisting of one large continental land mass and several smaller islands situated in the Caribbean Sea. Bordered by several other South American nations, Venezuela has suffered from persistent issues with drug trafficking, domestic drug abuse, and drug related violence for the past sixty years despite many attempts to enforce strict regulation.

Before 2017, cannabis and hemp were strictly illegal in Venezuela. Possession of up to 20 grams of hemp or 5 grams of artificially modified hemp could result in one to two years imprisonment. Now, possession of small amounts of marijuana for personal use isn’t a punishable offense in Venezuela.

Is CBD Oil Allowed in Venezuela?

Currently, the cultivation, production, trade, and acquisition of cannabis and hemp are illegal in Venezuela for recreational purposes. Those who possess small amounts of marijuana or hemp are not punished; however, they may be coerced to attend detox or drug rehabilitation facilities or could be caught in violation of the law.

Possessors with exceedingly high amounts of a substance such as hemp could be deemed traffickers or subject to short stints in jail, not exceeding one to two years.

Under this law, the cultivation and sale of industrial hemp is illegal, but purchasing and consuming hemp extracts such as CBD is completely legal. This policy model effectively excises out vendors while doing nothing to address growing consumer demand for hemp based remedies on the marketplace.

Experts are hopeful the Venezuela will liberalize the drug market soon after realizing the social and economic benefits of substances like CBD. For now, travelers to Venezuela should exercise caution when bringing CBD products with them for medical reasons. It is unknown if authorities there will distinguish between legal CBD with low to no THC and marijuana products with high THC.

What are the Benefits of Regular CBD Oil Use?

CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is one of the active compounds found in strains of hemp and marijuana. Unlike THC, CBD mitigates the effects of psychoactive and euphoriant effects of THC.
