Is CBD Oil Legal In Tuvalu?

by in International Law October 3, 2019

Formerly known as the Ellice Islands, Tuvalu is a Polynesian island country located in the Pacific ocean. Midway between Hawaii and Australia, Tuvalu manages its burgeoning drug crime well through the use of effective criminal justice systems. Since independence in the seventies, Tuvalu has suffered from nearly minimal issues with drug trafficking, smuggling, drug related violence and illegal cultivation.

Additionally, Tuvalu suffers from very few social problems due in part to the strong cultural influence on the island and the strong role of judicial institutions. In Tuvalu, both cannabis and low THC hemp are illegal for both recreational and medical use, owing to the decisions of high-status cultural leaders in narcotics’ policy institutions.

Is CBD Oil Allowed In Tuvalu?

Since both cannabis and hemp are illegal in Tuvalu, CBD oil is technically not legal in the country. However, many believe that the law is contradictory, complex, and not completely decided on the issue of edible CBD treatments. CBD products crafted from industrial hemp that contain absolutely zero THC content could be considered legal on the island, though some officials have been rebutting this claim since 2017.

Each island is comprised of a political institution that has its own high chief, also known as ulu-aliki, and several sub-chiefs that manage social affairs in the small region. A community council helps to decide the traditional customs, cultures, and local law. As CBD has grown more popular worldwide, the question of its legality has come up in many of these islands’ local governments.

Under the Falekaupule Act of 1997, every community council member is responsible to use much of its resources to assist the police in detection and prevention of criminal acts. Until CBD has a more clearly defined legal states, consumers should be wary about importing the treatment into the island – it is likely that public users will get caught. Many officials are unable to distinguish between CBD and psychoactive compounds like THC.

What Are The Benefits Of Regular CBD Oil Use?

Researchers claim to have linked regular CBD consumption with alleged positive impacts on users’ mental, physical and emotional health. By interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system, it is theoretically possible that CBD may play a large role in mitigating harmful autoimmune inflammation. By decreasing the overzealous immune response, CBD may help conditions that range from anxiety to acne. According to users, CBD could be beneficial for conditions such as:

  • Skin conditions like facial redness, eczema, psoriasis, and premature signs of aging
  • Chronic pain caused by persistent inflammation, such as sciatica, nerve pain, arthritis, and localized joint pain
  • High blood pressure and vasoconstriction, some of the primary precursors to heart disease
  • Epilepsy and other seizure disorders
  • Depression, anxiety, sociability issues, and PTSD
  • Glaucoma
  • Restless Leg Syndrome and muscle spasms
