Is CBD Oil Legal in Tunisia?

by in International Law October 3, 2019

The Republic of Tunisia is a country in the Maghreb region of North Africa and comprises the most northern tip of the whole African continent. Geographically, Tunisia is the closest African country to portions of Western Europe, just a mere 1,300 km off the coastline of Italy.

Tunisia’s strategic geographic location makes it susceptible to domestic drug abuse, smuggling, and entrenched drug crime syndicate activities. Many substances, such as cannabis and its derivatives, flow up from Tunisia to the rest of Western Europe through the ports.

Is CBD Oil Allowed in Tunisia?

Since 1953, cannabis and hemp have both been illegal for sale, cultivation, and use in Tunisia. Known locally as “zatla”, low THC hemp is believed to have been introduced through the Arab invasions in the ninth and twelfth centuries. Possession of minimal amounts of the substance could land users one to five years imprisonment and prohibitively large fines.

Unlike other African countries, Tunisia employs urinalysis as proof of possession – and potentially trafficking – of illicit substances. Consumers should be aware that marijuana derived CBD treatments can leave detectable amounts of THC in body samples. Hemp derived CBD does not leave detectable amounts and of course CBD Isolate has no THC content of any kind so will never test positive.

As of 2019, Tunisian activists have called for the decriminalization of both cannabis and hemp. The Coalition of Decriminalization of Consumption of Cannabis group has announced plans to work with government officials in fully deregulating policies concerning the production, use, and distribution of high THC compounds.

Before new laws potentially come into effect, all consumers should be wary about importing CBD products into the country. Technically, officials can’t legally distinguish between cannabis and CBD.

What are the Benefits of Regular CBD Oil Use?

Over the past decade, nearly 64 million Americans have tried CBD treatments at least once; this indicates CBD is one of the most quickly popularized health supplements on the market. Researchers claim to have linked CBD treatments to mental, physical, and emotional health benefits for users. According to many regular cannabidiol users, it could be helpful for conditions as diverse as:

  • Depression, anxiety, social issues, and PTSD
  • Vasoconstriction and high blood pressure, two of the most common precursors to heart disease
  • Skin conditions worsened by inflammation, such as eczema, psoriasis, the signs of premature aging, and facial redness
  • Chronic pain disorders caused by autoimmune inflammation, including arthritis, sciatica, nerve pain, and localized joint pain
  • Glaucoma
  • Restless Leg Syndrome and muscle spasms
  • Poor appetite and fluctuating body weight
  • Severe nausea and cachexia
