Is CBD Oil Legal In Togo?

by in International Law October 3, 2019

Togo, officially the Togolese Republic, is a thin sliver-like country in West Africa bordered by Ghana to the west and Burkina Faso to the north. As one of the smallest countries in Africa, Togo is no stranger to the persistent issues of drug related crime, whether that crime includes smuggling, domestic drug abuse, or drug related violence in the tiny region.

Togo is a primarily agricultural economy and its natural climate provides an almost year-round growing season for many types of crops. Recently, some agriculturalists have turned to cannabis and hemp production in the past twenty years because these crops can be 30 to 100 times more profitable per acre than other common crops.

Is CBD Oil Allowed In Togo?

After achieving independence from colonial powers in the sixties, Togo has struggled with keeping consistent and honest law enforcement and justice agencies staffed. Although Togo is small, political insurrection frequently destabilizes any attempts to make and execute coherent drug policy.

Currently, both cannabis and low THC hemp are illegal for recreational and medical use in Togo. However, individuals in possession of illicit substances like hashish in public often receive no legal repercussions. Enforcement of drug law can be complex, inconsistent, and constantly in contention by different extra-national groups within Togo.

Much of Togo’s drug policy is in alignment with the UN Council on Drug’s recommendations. The UN is helping the country to address threats linked to illicit drug trafficking and abuse by urging for harsher penalties on smugglers rather than individual users.

Consumers traveling into Togo should be wary about carrying any potentially illicit substance, including CBD, because it may be considered illegal depending on the specific enforcer. Importing CBD could be seen as a “minor drug trafficking crime”, which often nets travelers in far worse trouble than mere domestic possession.

What Are The Benefits Of Regular CBD Oil Use?

Researchers claim to have linked regular CBD consumption to mental, physical, and emotional health benefits. As hemp becomes increasingly legal all across the globe, the CBD market is expected to soar into the billions by the mid 2020’s. CBD works by interacting with the body’s natural endocannabinoid receptors to decrease the body’s harmful inflammatory response, which could positively affect conditions ranging from depression to chronic pain. According to users, CBD could help with conditions that include:

  • Depression, anxiety, social issues, and PTSD
  • Restless Leg Syndrome and muscle spasms
  • Skin conditions caused by harmful autoimmune response, including premature aging signs, psoriasis, eczema, and facial redness
  • High blood pressure and vasoconstriction, two of the primary precursors to heart disease acquired later on
  • Persistent pain conditions worsened by inflammation, such as sciatica, nerve pain, joint pain, and arthritis
  • Severe nausea and cachexia
