Consisting of six major states and over 900 smaller islands in Oceania, the Solomon Islands comprise a sovereign state lying just to the east of Papua New Guinea. After achieving independence from British rule in 1978, the islands sought self-governance and judicial rule completely extricated from global powers, meaning that their stance on drug use had to adapt to changing political conditions.

After cannabis and hemp were popularized by Western tourists in the late eighties, the Solomon Islands’ government sought to throttle consumer access to substances by tightening the penalties on drug trafficking and abuse.

Is CBD Oil Allowed in the Solomon Islands?

The Solomon Islands takes a strict stance on drug smuggling yet the perspective towards personal drug use can vary based on the particular community. While both cannabis and hemp are illegal at the higher levels of government, many locals openly use substances without fear of any repercussion by law enforcers.

Attitudes towards substance use vary widely based on the island. Typically, areas like the country’s capital, Honiara, have the strictest provisions against public intoxication while smaller communities are more lax in their treatment of drug crime. In particular, the hemp industry is unregulated and economically unfettered in some areas because of the permissive attitude towards drug use.

Technically, hemp is considered a derivative of cannabis and therefore an illicit narcotic. CBD products derived from hemp may likely be illegal in most parts of the Solomon Islands. Travelers who are unaware of local customs should remain wary about bringing any CBD treatments into the country, as drug related punishments can be severe and result in jail time.
