Somalia is a country located in the Horn of Africa that is bordered by Ethiopia to the west and the Gulf of Aden to the north. With one of the longest coastlines in Africa’s mainland, Somalia boasts a bustling port economy, resource exports and – unfortunately – a booming transnational drug trade.

For more than a decade, many Southern and Central parts of Somalia have not been under the control of any government. This problem was compounded by many nations’ unwillingness to formally recognize Somalia as a state, denying funding for drug programs that had flourished in many other states in the African continent.

Is CBD Oil Allowed in Somalia?

As Somalia’s legal status has changed and political control wavers, domestic drug abuse and transnational crime have plagued the state. Hemp and cannabis featured heavily in Somalian history as a traditional health and wellness treatment, yet now some users and vendors are inconsistently penalized for selling the substance.

As ex-combatants and struggling citizens have failed to access health institutions, many have turned to khat (a stimulant native to the Horn of Africa region), cannabis, and hemp to deal with persistent issues. Hemp is a quickly growing cash crop that can be 30 times as profitable as other crops in the region, making it an easy industry for agriculturalists to jump into.

Many users publicly consume substances that are technically illegal, such as cannabis and hemp. However, some have been punished or faced financial extortion from corrupt law enforcers. Until the legal status of hemp is fully clarified by the Northern Somali government, it’s important that users remain wary about importing or using CBD treatments in the country.

What are the Benefits of Regular CBD Oil Use?

CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is one of the primary compounds found in strains of hemp flowers and stems. Unlike THC, CBD is non-psychoactive and non-addictive; in fact, CBD inhibits the psychotropic effect of many narcotic substances by binding to the body’s natural endocannabinoid system (ECS). According to researchers, CBD may positively benefit many users’ physical, mental, and emotional woes by decreasing harmful inflammation in the body. Many users report that CBD has been helpful for a wide array of conditions that include:

  • Muscle spasms and restless leg syndrome
  • Severe nausea and cachexia, which refers to the wasting away of the body due to prolonged illness
  • Cluster migraines
  • Epilepsy and other seizure disorders
  • Anxiety, sociability issues, depression, and PTSD
  • Insomnia
  • High blood pressure and vasoconstriction, which are some of the primary causes of heart disease
  • Poor appetite and rapidly changing body weight
