Is CBD Oil Legal in Sao Tome and Principe?

by in International Law October 1, 2019

Sao Tome and Principe is an island country in the Gulf of Guinea, off the western equatorial coast of Central Africa. Consisting of two Archipelagoes, Sao Tome represents a highly trafficked region for drug cultivation and illicit smuggling heading towards the coast of West African countries like Guinea-Bissau.

Sao Tome was gradually colonized by the Portuguese, which had introduced sugar cane, slave trade, and cannabis onto the island in the fifteenth century. In fact, the island has a long history with the cannabis plant. In the late nineteenth century, the Portuguese Angolans sold large quantities to laborers in Sao Tome, further enabling the demand and supply for cannabis trade around the world. Since then, drug trade has been an incipient condition of the livelihood of many Sao Tome residents.

Is CBD Oil Allowed in Sao Tome and Principe?

Currently, both marijuana and hemp are completely illegal for both recreational and medical use in Sao Tome.

Both cannabis and hemp grow naturally in many parts of the two archipelagos. Since Sao Tome is a dispersed country, it’s difficult for the government to effectively quell the issues of domestic drug abuse and transnational drug shipment out to other parts of Africa.

Consumers should be aware that since CBD treatments are crafted with hemp, CBD products are illegal on the islands of Sao Tome. Although enforcement is lax, and many locals openly smoke illicit substances in public, travelers who don’t understand community customs could get unfairly penalized for substance abuse.

Experts believe that legalizing hemp could increase the economic and societal well being of Sao Tome residents. Around the world, hemp is known as “green gold” and can be more than 30 times as profitable per acre as other common crops.

What are the Benefits of Regular CBD Oil Use?

According to longitudinal studies, over 80 percent of those who’ve tried CBD at least once reported a moderate to substantial improvement in their chronic pain symptoms.

CBD, also known as cannabidiol, works by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), researchers claim this acts as a mitigating factor to harmful autoimmune inflammation that is behind many different mood and pain conditions. Many users report that CBD could be helpful for conditions as diverse as:

  • Insomnia
  • Poor appetite and irregular weight conditions
  • High blood pressure and vasoconstriction, two of the common precursors to heart disease
  • Cognitive problems and memory impairment
  • Depression, anxiety, PTSD, and social issues
  • Chronic pain conditions worsened by autoimmune inflammation, such as arthritis, sciatica, nerve pain and localized joint pain
  • Severe nausea and cachexia, which refers to the gradual wasting away of the body due to extended periods of chronic illness
  • Glaucoma
