Is CBD Oil Legal In Saint Vincent And The Grenadines?

by in International Law October 1, 2019

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines are a set of Caribbean islands in the southern portion of the Windward Islands. Lying where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Antilles island arc, Saint Vincent occupies a strategically important region for transnational drug crime, shipment routes, and local drug economy.

Although drug use presents a major problem for the islands, steady local efforts to overturn harsh drug restrictions have worked well within the past decade. Many believe that Saint Vincent was pushed into softer stances by the country’s surrounding Caribbean neighbors, which have sought to legalize cannabis.

Is CBD Oil Allowed In Saint Vincent And The Grenadines?

Currently, marijuana and hemp are now decriminalized and fully legal for medical use. Formerly, marijuana was widely and illicitly grown on the island and came to be the nation’s most profitable agricultural product. Other than Jamaica, Saint Vincent is the most prolific producer of cannabis in the Caribbean region.

Saint Vincent represented an excellent location for criminal organizations to cultivate marijuana because the islands are geographically diverse, making them isolated and hard to patrol. Many young cultivators started out working on banana farms but transitioned to cannabis after periods of economic downturn.

After the United States stepped back from cannabis and hemp eradication in Saint Vincent, the space for decriminalization – and possibly full legalization in the coming years – has opened up. Now, hemp crops on the islands are valued at over USD $40 million and present a major tax revenue stream for the government.

Individual consumers can rest assured knowing that they won’t receive jail time or exorbitant fines for CBD consumption. However, until full legalization occurs, vendors will not be able to sell CBD treatments on the general market.

What Are The Benefits Of Regular CBD Oil Use?

Researchers claim to have linked CBD, also known as cannabidiol, to supposed benefits on users’ emotional and physical wellness over the past decade. CBD works by interacting with the body’s natural endocannabinoid system, allegedly decreasing the harmful autoimmune inflammation that worsens many pre-existing chronic health conditions. According to users, CBD could be helpful for health issues such as:

  • Poor appetite and rapidly fluctuating body weight
  • Skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, facial redness and premature aging
  • Severe nausea and cachexia, which refers to the gradual wasting away of the body due to extended periods of illness
  • Inability to fall or stay asleep over the course of the night
  • Depression, anxiety, PTSD, and social anxiety
  • Chronic pain caused by inflammation, such as arthritis, sciatica, nerve pain and localized joint pain conditions
  • Epilepsy and other seizure disorders
  • Cluster migraines
