Is CBD Oil Legal In Saint Lucia?

by in International Law October 1, 2019

Saint Lucia is a sovereign island country in the West Indies situated along the boundary of the Atlantic Ocean. After overthrowing French rule in the mid twentieth century, substances like cannabis and hemp have played a larger and more contentious role in the island’s domestic economy.

According to an international study conducted in 2005, Saint Lucia is a well known transshipment site for cannabis and hemp traveling from South America to the United States and the rest of Europe. Active criminal agencies are known to stockpile these illicit substances in less densely populated regions of the island.

Is CBD Oil Allowed In Saint Lucia?

Currently, both cannabis and hemp are considered illegal for recreational and medical use. In the early 2000s, Saint Lucia officials were dedicated to stamping out transnational crime and local drug use through imposing harsher penalties on possessors and smugglers. Every year, the incidences of drug crime has increased despite rising funding to narcotics organizations.

Recently, government officials have started changing the way they’ve traditionally addressed local drug crime by considering full legalization of hemp and cannabis. In March 2019, the government of Saint Lucia announced that it may join its Caribbean neighbors, namely Antigua and Barbuda, to decriminalize cannabis. The announcement is unsurprising for many because, in recent years, drug charges on users have been decreasing.

According to some officials, decriminalization is just one step along the path to full legalization. Soon, licensed growers could legally cultivate, sell, and distribute cannabis and hemp across the islands.

Though attitudes towards CBD are better than they ever have been across the island, users should still be aware that hemp is not yet decriminalized in Saint Lucia. It is not yet recommended for users to import CBD onto the island, even though enforcement is lax and law officials mainly target users of high THC compounds.
