Is CBD Oil Legal In Rwanda?

by in International Law October 1, 2019

The Republic of Rwanda is a country in Central and East Africa, considered among the smallest countries of the African mainland. Bordered by Uganda and the Congo, Rwanda has been plagued by persistent social safety, economic, and widespread political violence over the past few decades. Comprised by a predominantly young and rural population, many families rely on cannabis or hemp cultivation to escape poverty.

Is CBD Oil Allowed In Rwanda?

Despite the strong cultural ties of Rwandan communities towards hemp, any substance containing any concentration of THC is illegal for both recreational and medical use. Possession and trafficking can result in hefty fines and long jail sentences in overcrowded, run down prison conditions.

A 1959 study showed that hemp use was most closely associated with the Twa people, who were an economic and social minority group with low status in the region. As a result, the government linked hemp to negative political and social associations and confined hemp’s use to poorer ethnic groups.

Slowly yet surely, the political battleground has been opening up to introducing hemp to full legal status. In 2010, the Minister of Health proposed a law that would allow cannabis to be used for medical purposes. Recently, parliament unanimously drafted a new law establishing the Food and Drug Authority, which would provide some of the institutional scaffolding necessary for full legalization of CBD products.

Many are hopeful Rwandan government will begin to understand the economic and social benefits of legalized hemp. For now, consumers should be wary about bringing any questionable substance into the region and should avoid any concentrate with more than 0 percent THC content.

What Are The Benefits Of Regular CBD Oil Use?

CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is the non psychoactive and non addictive component found in strains of hemp. Extracted from the flowers and stems of the hemp plant, CBD has allegedly been linked to reducing the body’s natural autoimmune inflammatory response. Reducing inflammation has been linked to a whole host of health and wellness benefits, including improvements on everything from depression to chronic pain. According to both researchers and users, CBD may positively impact conditions as diverse as:

  • Severe nausea and cachexia, which refers to the wasting away of the body due to prolonged illness
  • Cognitive decline and memory issues
  • Glaucoma
  • Restless Leg Syndrome and muscle spasms
  • Insomnia
  • Poor appetite and rapidly changing body weight
  • Many of the precursors to heart disease later on in life, such as vasoconstriction and high heart rate
  • Chronic pain caused by persistent inflammation, such as sciatica, nerve pain, arthritis and localized joint pain
