Is CBD Oil Legal In North Korea?

by in International Law October 1, 2019

North Korea is an area in East Asia that constitutes the upper half of the Korean peninsula. Known as the Hermit Kingdom, North Korea is a controversial nation about which rumors abound, mostly because it is so reclusive. Some things about the nation are well known such as their nascent nuclear nation status and one family rule.

What’s not well known about the country is its legal stance towards the use of drugs. The status of cannabis and hemp is incredibly unclear due to the lack of external news sources that can reliably comment on it. Some observers state that hemp is effectively legal or at the very least tolerated by enforcers, while others argue that hemp consumption is very illegal.

Is CBD Oil Allowed In North Korea?

Before the state of North Korea formed, hemp was a constitutive crop in ancient Korea, with some samples of hemp fabrics dating as far back as 3000 BCE. Some reporters have stated that, while there are huge and recurrent crack downs on narcotic substances, hemp is not considered an illicit drug.

Keegan Hamilton, a reporter for The Guardian, stated that local mixtures of hemp and cannabis are widely used by the public. He cites that hemp with only trace amounts of THC content is cultivated on an industrial level and many grow personal family crops. Hemp is grown to make consumer goods like towels, noodles, and military uniforms. Though hemp consumption may not be explicitly condoned, it is unlikely to be severely punished.

Interestingly, while natural born citizens are not penalized for drug use, American travelers have been sentenced to decades in North Korean prisons for minor drug possession offenses. Technically, hemp is classed in the same category of meth and heroin.

What Are The Benefits Of Regular CBD Use?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is the second most prevalent of the active compounds found in hemp. Derived from the cousin of the cannabis plant, CBD is completely non psychoactive and non addictive. In fact, some users have reported that regular CBD oil consumption has helped them kick dangerous over the counter pain medication habits. According to a recent report from the World Health Organization, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of public health problems. CBD may be helpful for treating a range of conditions, including:

  • Glaucoma
  • Vasoconstriction and other secondary conditions related to heart disease
  • The effects of cancer and cancer treatments, such as severe nausea and cachexia
  • Muscle spasms and Restless Leg Syndrome
  • Inability to fall asleep or stay asleep
  • Poor appetite regulation and inability to maintain a healthy weight
  • Addiction
