Is CBD Oil Legal In Nigeria?

by in International Law October 1, 2019

The Federal Republic of Nigeria is a country in west Africa, bordering Niger to the north and Benin to the west. It’s coast lies in the south, located along the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean. Like many other coastal African countries, Nigeria has suffered from persistent issues with domestic drug use, cultivation, and transnational drug crime all worsened by continuous social and political upheaval.

After reclaiming independence from British colonial rule, Nigeria quickly worked to address growing drug crime by cooperating closely with international and local organizations to stem the flow of narcotics. Often, illicit substances like cannabis flow through the ports to filter throughout the rest of West Africa and up towards Europe.

Is CBD Oil Allowed In Nigeria?

Nigeria represents one of the largest cannabis and hemp growers in the whole African continent, with over 8 percent of its population regularly using cannabis for medical or recreational purposes. Hemp is one of the most profitable cash crops and one acre can be worth 30 times more than standard rice cultivation.

Despite this, both cannabis and hemp containing any concentration of THC are completely illegal. Currently, it’s unclear whether or not CBD products produced with 0 percent THC are fully legal in the country, as organizations are much more concerned with narcotic and psychoactive effects.

Until a full policy decision has been made, it is recommended that consumers be wary about importing and domestically ingesting CBD in Nigeria. Many officials may not distinguish between CBD and psychoactive narcotics in the legal process.

What Are The Benefits Of Regular CBD Oil Use?

Within the past two years alone, both South Africa and Zimbabwe have legalized the production, sale, and distribution of hemp products such as CBD. These policy decisions are the result of a worldwide legal cascade that has seen a decrease in strong drug policy stances. As CBD has gained widespread public acceptance, researchers have been clambering to demonstrate the potentially powerful influence of hemp on users’ mental, physical, and emotional well being. According to many users, CBD could benefit conditions as diverse as:

  • Inability to fall or stay asleep throughout the night
  • Irregular appetite and fluctuating body weight
  • Chronic pain caused by persistent inflammation, such as arthritis, sciatica, nerve pain and localized joint pain
  • Glaucoma
  • Restless Leg Syndrome and muscle spasms
  • Social issues, anxiety, depression, and PTSD
  • Vasoconstriction, one of the primary symptoms and causes of heart disease later on in life
