Is CBD Oil Legal in Moldova?

by in International Law October 1, 2019

Moldova is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, bordered by Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north. During the reign of the Soviet Union, the country was dubbed an autonomous communist region (MASSR). After the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, Moldova declared full independence as a parliamentary republic.

Like all post-Soviet countries, Moldova suffers from economic stagnation, poverty, and civil unrest stemming from lack of community resources and institutional help. All of these issues have lead to increasing problems with drug smuggling, substance abuse, and drug related crime as consumer markets try to cope with societal hardship.

Is CBD Oil Allowed in Moldova?

According to NATO, Moldova’s hemp and cannabis trafficking market is valued around 200 to 250 million dollars annually. Illicit cultivation is carried out on a large scale within the country, though most of the drug economy is comprised of dealers’ illegal smuggling out to Western Europe.

Interestingly, drug use and possession is not a crime in Moldova; however, it is an administrative offense that could result in required community service of up to or more than two hours. However, consumers should be aware that possession can easily be classed as trafficking if the user carries additional drug paraphernalia or high amounts of the substance. Trafficking is punishable by several years jail time and prohibitively large fines.

Currently, there is no legal distinction between marijuana, which contains the psychoactive ingredient referred to as THC, and hemp. Unlike marijuana, hemp is non-psychoactive. Experts are hopeful that Eastern European countries will change their policies as the economic and societal benefits of legal hemp and CBD markets become clarified.

What are the Benefits of Regular CBD Oil Use?

CBD, the active cannabinoid compound derived from hemp, started making headlines after a CNN documentary dubbed “Weed” spoke about its health benefits in a 2013 special. Since then, researchers have clambered to try and find the limit to CBD oil’s mental, physical, and emotional improvements in users. CBD works by interacting with the body’s natural endocannabinoid system, which is involved in nearly every aspect of health and wellness. According to users, CBD can positively impact many conditions that include:

  • Cachexia and severe nausea
  • Glaucoma
  • Muscle spasms and Restless Leg Syndrome
  • Chronic pain conditions caused by inflammation, such as joint pain, arthritis, and sciatica
  • Poor appetite
  • Insomnia
  • Vasoconstriction, one of the primary precursors to heart disease
