Is CBD Oil Legal In Mexico?

by in International Law October 1, 2019

Over the past few years, Mexico has slowly transitioned to a medical marijuana program that legalizes doctor’s prescriptions containing THC, a formerly illicit psychoactive substance. Entrepreneurs are hopeful that the country’s liberalizing attitude towards cannabis could translate into a more open marketplace for CBD.

Is CBD Oil Allowed In Mexico?

Unlike the United States, Mexico’s new set of regulatory policy provides a more consistent, evenly applied, and open CBD market than ever. While the country’s Northern neighbor has federally legitimized the production of hemp, some states have made the legality of CBD in edible items so contradictory that consumers and vendors don’t know how to act.

Additionally, the United States government, FDA, and DEA all held opposing ideas about the legality of CBD treatments. This is not to mention specific state’s agricultural and health departments’ policies, which vary widely from region to region.

Mexico, on the other hand, has gone about providing a broad regulatory framework for the sale, consumption, and use of CBD. To many, CBD has become synonymous with common health vitamins and benign daily supplements. Any CBD product containing less than 1 percent THC content is legal to be sold in the country.

Consumers should be aware that political contention has once again reared its head in Mexico. In March 2019, the country’s main regulatory body for medical cannabis revoked crucial guidelines for issuing growers’ licenses, which makes many agriculturalists question the status of current licenses. It is unclear what products will be legal to import, export, or grow domestically until the commission finishes its work.

Many are hopeful that as the government begins to realize the societal, economic, and political benefits of a fully legalized hemp market, they will better accommodate the industry. Experts have linked hemp and cannabis friendly laws with decreased opiate and over the counter pain medication abuse.

What Are The Benefits Of Regular CBD Oil Use?

As more countries decriminalize marijuana, the health supplement CBD has skyrocketed in mainstream acceptance and popularity. Unlike THC, CBD derived from industrially certified hemp does not cause any notable euphoric or psychoactive effects. Research is ongoing and has a long way to go, but many current users have claimed that CBD use can play in role in affecting users’ memory, mood, sleep, metabolism, and energy balance. If these claims are true then CBD could help a diverse range of conditions, such as:

  • Muscle spasms
  • Chronic pain
  • Anxiety, depression, and PTSD
  • Epilepsy
  • Glaucoma
  • Loss of appetite and inability to remain at a stable body weight
