Is CBD Oil Legal In Mauritius?

by in International Law October 1, 2019

Mauritius is an island nation situated in the Indian Ocean. About 2000 km off of the African continent, Mauritius suffers from many of the same woes as the African continent and associated islands. After the dissolution of colonial rule in the mid sixties, Mauritius has suffered from increasing problems with drug cultivation, smuggling, and abuse.

Although Mauritius is a common transnational drug port, drug use is among the lowest when compared to continental Africa. Only .91 percent of the population uses narcotics, while 3.9 percent of the population are regular hemp or cannabis users. Hemp was first introduced to the island during the period of Indian indentured servitude, when immigrants consumed hemp to heal aches and pains after a long day of plantation labor.

Is CBD Oil Allowed In Mauritius?

As drug use rates have continued to steadily climb over the last two decades, Mauritius government has grown increasingly concerned about the societal problem. Historically, Mauritius has treated drug addiction as a crime rather than a public health concern.

Since 2006, Mauritius has funded an institution known as the Anti Drug and Smuggling Unit to regulate the import of illicit substances such as marijuana. Recently, the island has had problems with the development of “synthetic cannabis”, which is considered completely legal under current narcotics laws. Users of all social classes have died due to these barely legal substances.

By contrast, it seems that the island’s policy against CBD and hemp is nonsensical. Hemp is not legally distinguished from cannabis, even though it has a long history of usage and is completely non-psychoactive. Experts are hopeful that the islands’ anti-hemp and CBD policies will shift as the substance gains political and economic recognition across the world.

Nevertheless, consumers should be cautious about bringing CBD into the island. Travelers could be tagged as “minor drug traffickers”, which nets some users several years in prison and heavy fines.

What Are The Benefits Of Regular CBD Oil Use?

Studies have linked regular CBD use with mental, physical, and emotional health benefits for many users. Over 80 percent of those who’ve tried CBD oil at least once reported a moderate to substantial decrease in the severity of their chronic pain conditions. After hemp was formally legalized in both the United States and Canada, CBD has started to gain mainstream acceptance around the world. According to many users, CBD could help with a wide array of persistent conditions that include:

  • Cachexia and severe nausea
  • Chronic pain conditions worsened by persistent inflammation, such as arthritis, sciatica, and general joint pain
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Vasoconstriction, one of the precursors of heart disease
  • Inability to fall or stay asleep
  • Irregular appetite and fluctuating body weight
  • Depression, social anxiety, and PTSD
  • Glaucoma
