Is CBD Oil Legal In Latvia?

by in International Law September 30, 2019

Latvia is a country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe. Since its independence from Russia in the 1990s, Latvia has suffered from increasing complexities in drug trafficking, abuse, and drug related violence.

Currently, cannabis is illegal for recreational and medical purposes in the country. Possession of quantities higher than 1 gram are fined by at least €280 euros while second offenses are considered criminal acts. Larger quantities can be punished by up to 15 years imprisonment.

Is CBD Oil Allowed In Latvia?

Many of Latvia’s drug policies are directly descended from the Soviet Union’s stance on drug control. Under communist rule, marijuana smuggling and trade would result in anywhere from 1 to 3 years in prison or forced labor, even while possession incurred no legal trouble.

Since the collapse of the USSR, cannabis and hemp’s popularity has risen dramatically. In 1990, less than 2 percent of the population had ever used any THC compound once. As economic conditions stabilized, use grew to match and, at some points, exceed Western European rates. In response, the Latvian government criminalized possession and consumption in addition to drug trafficking.

THC is considered illegal due to the international law dubbed the United Nations Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs signed by Latvian government in 1993. According to the policy, THC is considered criminal because it is psychoactive and potentially addictive, which could have degenerative effects on widespread social welfare. In contrast, industrially crafted hemp is legally grown and produced in Latvia.

Since hemp contains only trace amounts of THC, it is not considered a controlled substance. Latvia has adopted the Western European approach on this issue, borrowing policy decisions primarily from the European Union. Consumers are allowed to purchase products containing active cannabinoids from any vendor who markets it. Vendors feel confident enough to sell CBD in local markets, restaurants, cafes, and retailers without fear of legal repercussions.

What Are The Benefits Of Regular CBD Oil Use?

Researchers have studied CBD for its potential to positively impact user’s mental, physical, and emotional well being. CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is one of the over one hundred active compounds found in strains of hemp. CBD works by decreasing the body’s harmful inflammatory response, which is linked to issues ranging from depression to chronic pain conditions. According to some researchers, CBD could potentially benefit conditions that include:

  • Chronic inflammatory pain conditions
  • Poor appetite
  • Nausea
  • Epilepsy
  • Glaucoma
  • PTSD, anxiety, and depression
  • Vasoconstriction, which has been linked to heart disease
