Is CBD Oil Legal In Laos?

by in International Law September 30, 2019

Located at the heart of the Indochinese peninsula, Laos is bordered by China to the northwest and Vietnam to the east. Like other Southeast Asian governments, Laos imposes some of the toughest drug laws in the world on both drug users and dealers. It’s hard for the government to respond to drug issues in a balanced way when the country is considered the “Golden Triangle”, a region considered the world’s hotspot of narcotics production.

In spite of the region’s harsh laws, Laos is overrun with illegal drugs that include narcotics, opioids, and cannabis. Drug trafficking can land international travelers the death penalty, while possession of amounts higher than 15 grams could result in life imprisonment.

Is CBD Oil Allowed In Laos?

Currently, cannabis use for both recreational and medical purposes is completely illegal in Laos. Despite the law, hemp and high THC compounds are openly sold in street markets, shops, and retail stores. It’s not uncommon for police officers to take bribes from cannabis users in order for them to walk free.

In Vang Vieng, cannabis is openly sold in bars that infuse their foods with THC. The area has become a popular tourist hotspot for psychedelics, opium, and marijuana. The country suffers from an inability to consistently and fairly apply drug law on abusers; often, wealthy tourists can walk free while poor locals receive life imprisonment for comparable crimes.

In March of 2019, the Prime Minister officially organized a seminar to discuss the legal stance of medical marijuana and hemp in the country. Slowly, the Laos government has started realizing the benefits of decriminalizing hemp use due to the rapid change in Western international law. Legalizing hemp and CBD could go a long way toward rehabilitating Laos’ societal and economic welfare.

What Are The Benefits Of Regular CBD Oil Use?

CBD oil is a form of highly concentrated, effectively dosed hemp flower extract. Crafted from one of the over one hundred active cannabinoids found in hemp, CBD has been researched for its potential to positively benefit user’s mental, emotional, and physical well being. According to some researchers, CBD might improve conditions that include:

  • Depression, anxiety, and PTSD
  • Chronic pain conditions caused by inflammation, such as arthritis, sciatica, and nerve pain
  • Insomnia
  • Poor appetite
  • Severe nausea and cachexia
  • Epilepsy
  • Glaucoma
  • Vasoconstriction, one of the precursors of heart disease
