Is CBD Oil Legal In Kiribati?

by in International Law September 30, 2019

Kiribati is a sovereign nation in Micronesia situated in the central Pacific Ocean. After achieving its independence from the United Kingdom in 1979, the small set of islands has struggled to keep its population healthy and protected from persistent drug smuggling, abuse, and drug offense violations.

Under Kiribati penal code, trafficking or possession of cannabis and hemp is considered a serious offense and prison time may result for carrying even minimal amounts. The island nation operates under a strict quarantine regime for the import of any substance; since hemp is not yet considered a benign supplement, importing CBD into the country may result in several different types of legal charges.

Is CBD Oil Allowed In Kiribati?

Although Kiribati isn’t a major producer of cannabis or hemp, there is a large import consumer market that dominates the islands’ economy. Officials have grown increasingly concerned about hemp since its legal status has changed all across the world. As time goes on, the country may be forced to change their laws to keep up with the shifting international standard. Experts believe it may be too difficult for the small territory to effectively regulate the sale, consumption, and import of CBD products.

As a country that has relatively recently gained its independence, the Kiribati government is still struggling with consistently and fairly applying legal penalties on different crimes. Though many officials believe that drug abuse is a public health issue rather than a criminal offense, many small time users have been heavily punished purely to provide a legal example for the rest of the islands.

Until the country adjusts its laws to catch up with consumer demand, many will have to wait for CBD and hemp to gain full legal recognition in Kiribati. The country does not respect travelers’ medical certifications or prescriptions for CBD treatments. All travelers to Kiribati should leave their CBD at home so that they don’t violate the country’s drug policies and face jail time and/or heavy fines.

What Are The Benefits Of Regular CBD Oil Use?

CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is one of the many active substances found in strains of hemp. Researchers have been studying CBD for its potential to positively change users’ relationships to their own mental, emotional, and physical health conditions. According to many users, CBD could help with a wide range of conditions that include:

  • Severe nausea and cachexia
  • Pain conditions caused by persistent inflammation, such as arthritis, sciatica, and general joint pain
  • Vasoconstriction, one of the precursors to heart disease
  • Inability to fall or stay asleep for the duration of the night
  • Glaucoma
  • Restless Leg Syndrome and muscle spasms
  • Depression, anxiety, and PTSD
