Is CBD Oil Legal In Israel?

by in International Law September 30, 2019

In July of 2018, the Israeli Knesset approved a bill for the decriminalization of hemp and high THC compounds like marijuana. Though detractors claim it is only a superficial bill, Israel has been treating these substances as if they are functionally decriminalized for several years before the act’s introduction.

Israel has a very strong history of hemp consumption, ranking as the world’s sixteenth highest hemp use per capita in 2017. According to the survey, over 8.88 percent of Israelis regularly consume hemp or marijuana.

Is CBD Oil Allowed In Israel?

Like the United States, there are many conflicting institutional opinions about the legality of CBD products for sale, cultivation, and consumption in the marketplace. The Ministry of Health posits that CBD oil is not yet cleared for ingestion, much like how the United States FDA has condemned hemp use. However, local authorities have claimed that CBD is not a drug at all because it contains only trace amounts of THC, the psychoactive compound found in cannabis.

Currently, high THC compound use is allowed for home use of up to 15 grams. It is exceedingly rare for law enforcers to target consumers in their own residence, though technically only medical patients have fully legal access to the compound. Citizens caught using cannabis in public can’t be arrested on their first or second offense, yet they could receive minor fines that go on to fund rehabilitation programs.

In Israel, the consumption of THC is considered a public health concern rather than a legal or criminal act. The Ministry of Health, which directs the Drugs Ordinance program, has condemned CBD yet so far there have been no public legal repercussions made against individual users.

Travelers visiting Israel should be cognizant that customs officials uphold the Drug Ordinances policy to support the Ministry of Health’s mission. It is not recommended to carry CBD into the country past the borders; however, medical patients can legally bring CBD if they have obtained a doctor’s certification.

What Are The Benefits Of Regular CBD Use?

Researchers have been studying the potential positive impact that regular CBD oil consumption can have on users’ mental, emotional, and physical well being. CBD functions by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid receptor, which is a network every mammal has that regulates almost all aspects of health. According to claims made by longitudinal studies, CBD could allegedly ease the severity of conditions such as:

  • Severe nausea
  • Vasoconstriction, one of the precursors of heart disease
  • Epilepsy and other seizure disorders
  • Glaucoma
  • Depression, anxiety, and PTSD
  • Cluster migraines
