Is CBD Oil Legal In Honduras?

by in International Law September 30, 2019

Honduras is a country in Central America bordered to the West by Guatemala and to the southeast by Nicaragua. Cannabis and marijuana has a long history here and was used by ancient Mayans in the area for hundreds, maybe thousands of years.

In fact, it was recently discovered that Mayan sites mistaken for ritual pyramids were actually used for the widespread cultivation of cannabis. In recent years, the Honduras government has clamped down on drug use, trafficking, and drug related violence in response to rapidly increasing crime rate in the region.

Is CBD Oil Allowed In Honduras?

According to statistics from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Honduras had one of the highest murder rates in the world at a staggering 92 out of 100,000 residents in 2012. Most of these homicides occurred directly or in part due to the organized crime associated with drug trafficking.

Geographically, Honduras sits at the ideal location for transnational drug trade. Many drugs, including high THC compounds like hash and marijuana, come into Honduras and are sent up through the rest of Central America to the United States. The government has sought to stamp out drug crime by tightening legal penalties on substance abuse.

The country has an extradition treaty with many countries, meaning that drug abusers are liable to be immediately expelled to their home country if found in violation of narcotics law. Natural born citizens may face hefty fines or several years of jail time.

Currently, high THC substances are completely illegal and one of the most majorly trafficked drugs in the country. Many experts have advocated that the government should focus more on public health and safety rather than drug crime. Legalizing hemp compounds could go a long way in bringing users into the care of established institutions rather than leaving them to the influence of violent drug traffickers.

The country’s officials have made no public stance on the legality of CBD without any THC concentration, though travelers should be cognizant that their CBD treatments could be considered illegal. Additionally, many law enforcers may be unable to distinguish between industrially crafted CBD and more illicit compounds.

What Are The Benefits Of Regular CBD Use?

CBD has been researched for its potential to positively change user’s relationships to their mental, physical, and emotional states. Unlike addictive opiates or over the counter painkillers, regular CBD use is completely non-addictive and non-psychoactive. For many users, CBD doesn’t keep them from enjoying life or overstimulate them with a euphoriant effect; in fact, CBD treatments could help users build a sober, pain free lifestyle. CBD is potentially helpful for many conditions, including:

  • Several types of cancer and the secondary symptoms of cancer, including severe nausea and cachexia
  • Cluster Migraine
  • Epilepsy and other seizure disorders
  • PTSD, anxiety, depression, and general mood disorders
  • Poor sleep quality
  • Lack of appetite
