Is CBD Oil Legal In Grenada?

CBD Oil And The Spice Isle

Grenada, dubbed the “Spice Isle”, is a Caribbean country known for its nutmeg plantations, colorful eighteenth century homes, and crystal blue beaches.

The country has some of the highest rates of adult drug use out of all the Caribbean countries, with an annual prevalence of THC use among adults hitting a staggering 10.5 percent in 2005. Like many other tropical island countries, hemp and hash were first introduced to Grenada by Indian indentured servants in the mid eighteenth century. Workers would use hemp to deal with bodily aches and pains after a long day of labor on the plantations.

Is CBD Oil Allowed In Grenada?

Grenada produces a small amount of hemp; however, the country mainly serves as a transshipment region for drugs headed towards the United States. Seventy five percent of the hemp grown on the island is for local consumption, while the remainder is trafficked abroad to Barbados, Trinidad, and Tobago.

Following the United States decision to federally legalize industrial hemp, all eyes have been on the Caribbean to see how the island countries would respond. Despite widespread public pressure, many countries have remained steadfast. After a 2014 Caribbean Community discussion around the possibility of liberalizing hemp law, the Human Resource Minister clarified: “The government’s position is very clear. The cultivation of hash and Indian hemp in Grenada is illegal.”

The government’s response came as a shock to many islanders and legal experts. After all, the island was originally pushed to criminalize hemp because of the United States’ tightening restrictions during the War on Drugs era in the seventies. Still, the Grenada government characterizes drug use as more of a criminal offense than a public health concern.

Travelers entering Grenada with CBD should be incredibly wary. Medical patients should bring a doctor’s certification and have their products in properly labeled containers. Additionally, users should stick to CBD products made with industrially certified hemp and absolutely no THC content.

What Are The Benefits Of Regular CBD Oil Use?

CBD oil started entering popular social consciousness after a CNN documentary, titled “Weed”, was released in the early 2000s. Since then, researchers have been scrambling to understand the limit of CBD’s health benefits for users. Many report that regular CBD use has helped them with a wide array of mental, physical, and emotional problems. CBD could possibly lessen the severity of many conditions, including:

  • Arthritis, nerve pain, and sciatica
  • Skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, inflammation, and aging
  • The symptoms of cancer, including severe nausea and cachexia
  • Poor appetite
  • Insomnia
  • Depression, PTSD, and social anxiety
