Is CBD Oil Legal In Greece?

The laws that surround CBD, hemp and cannabis are often confusing and vague. Most of this confusion stems from the varying laws that change from location to location. Another confusing factor is caused by a lack of knowledge in understanding the differences between these various products.

What Is CBD And THC?

Let’s take a look at some of the differences in the two.

  • CBD is short for Cannabidiol.
  • Cannabidiol is a compound found within the cannabis plant.
  • CBD is a non-psychoactive compound. 
  • CBD comes from the cannabis strain Cannabis Sativa L. or industrial hemp.
  • CBD from hemp will not make a person test positive on a drug test. 

Looking at THC it is quite different from CBD.

  • THC is an abbreviation for Tetrahydrocannabinol.
  • THC can also be found in the cannabis plant.
  • While CBD is found in hemp, THC is generally found in great quantity only in marijuana. 
  • THC is a psychoactive compound that causes intoxication when consumed.
  • THC will make a person test positive on a drug test.

Preliminary research has tentatively indicated that CBD might be beneficial in the treatment of some medical conditions associated with inflammation and chronic pain. There are ongoing studies and hopefully that research continues. However, current evidence from studies done show promising results that CBD might help treat the following afflictions:

  • Arthritis
  • Muscular Sclerosis
  • Chronic Inflammation
  • Insomnia
  • Muscle Spasms
  • Chronic Back Pain

The Legality Of CBD And Cannabis In Greece

Cannabis is illegal in Greece for recreational purposes. However, in 2017, the use of cannabis for medical purposes was implemented. However, this law has yet to take effect.

During July of 2016, the Greek government formed a group to look into the possibility of using cannabis for medical purposes. Later, during 2017, the Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced that a ministerial decision had been made in regards to the legalization of medical cannabis. The decision made medical marijuana legal for patients with a prescription from their doctor.

Furthermore, during 2018, the Greek parliament decided to approve a law that made the production and cultivation of medical cannabis legal.

In Greece, industrial hemp was banned in 1957. 60 years later, thanks to the changes regarding medical cannabis, producers in Greece are allowed to plant a variety of hemp that is deemed legal according to the European Union. This strains must contain 0.2% or less of THC.

This means that CBD products, such as CBD oil are legal in Greece if they contain 0.2% or less of THC within them. Furthermore, drug and narcotics law exempt industrial hemp from the controlled substances list.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line is that CBD products are legal in Greece. Those who use CBD products can travel to Greece freely without the worry of prosecution for using CBD oil.

The laws that surround CBD products are constantly changing. These laws differ widely depending on location. It is because of this that all of those who use CBD products should remain up to date on changes surrounding these products.I
