Is CBD Oil Legal In Georgia?

by in International Law September 30, 2019

In June of 2018, the country of Georgia became the first to legalize the consumption of high THC compounds like hash, officially making it the first former Soviet state to do so. The national constitutional court justified the position by stating that THC only harms the user and restricting it would be an assault on individual freedom.

High THC hemp was legalized after a high profile court case made it all the way to the top court. “Administrative punishment for the consumption of [hash] is now revoked by the Constitutional Court,” stated an editor from Georgia Today, “which means that the use of hemp is now legal in Georgia.”

Georgia: A CBD Pioneer

Georgia’s decision came after the formal decriminalization of hemp consumption just a year previous by the country’s court system. Before this, the criminal code allowed for individual users to be punished with prison time and heavy fines for possessing more than 70 grams of the compound.

Some health officials have found the ruling unconventional and dangerous, believing that drug use is fundamentally a societal problem. The Health Ministry maintains the position that hemp, which can be extracted into CBD, should only be used for medical purposes.

Russian officials are also opposed to the legalization of hemp in Georgia, believing that it’s a breach of public trust.

Despite some international and domestic organizations opposing the new law, CBD proponents and business owners are thrilled at the decrease in market restrictions. It’s not uncommon to find specialty shops, mega retailers, restaurants, and pet stores that market CBD treatments. Whether it’s tinctures, oil, body creams, or baked goods, there is no shortage of legal CBD to be found in Georgia.

However, any CBD product with any amount of THC is still illegal to sell and cultivate in the country. Vendors should remain wary and stick to marketing CBD Isolate products, which contain none of the psychoactive substance.

What Are The Benefits Of Regular CBD Use?

Researchers claim to have linked CBD use to a number of benefits on users’ mental, physical, and emotional health. CBD works by binding to the body’s endocannabinoid system, a network of receptors that regulates nearly every aspect of health and wellness. CBD might go a long way to decrease the severity of persistent health issues, including:

  • Several forms of cancer
  • Inflammatory skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, and the signs of aging
  • Persistent pain conditions caused by inflammation
  • Stress oxidation
  • Depression, anxiety, and PTSD
  • Vasoconstriction
