Is CBD Oil Legal In Fiji?

by in International Law September 30, 2019

In the late nineteenth century, Indian workers who came to Fiji under the indentured labour system brought scores of Indian hemp with them. “Indian hemp” is a natural plant strain that contains less than 1 percent THC, the psychoactive substance in controlled substances, and over 10 percent cannabidiol, or CBD. Since then, Fiji has been one of the most major producers of hemp in Oceania.

Is CBD Oil Allowed In Fiji?

In Fiji, recreational drugs of any kind are not allowed. Possession of even small quantities of THC laden products can lead to imprisonment and hefty fines. In fact, carrying even a small amount of hash results in a mandatory three month prison sentence.

As the years have gone on, Fiji’s drug policies have just gotten harsher and harsher. Drug trafficking has become a more common offense and, in response, the government has clamped down on crime and punishment. Anyone found manufacturing, importing, or exporting illicit substances could face life imprisonment and a 600,000 USD fine.

Fiji is a major port island in the middle of the Pacific, meaning that the dangers of increasing drug use among youth is a great concern for government officials. As of yet, there has been little word on the legality of “Indian Hemp” or THC free CBD products.

It is difficult to find entrepreneurs openly marketing CBD products in Fiji, as many are worried about fines, jail time, or expulsion from the island. Consumers usually turn to online sources to secure CBD Isolate products, which contain absolutely no THC content.

Despite legal restrictions, hemp grows naturally in Fiji’s sunny, wet climate. Many of the country’s 322 islands, which are difficult to access and patrol, are blessed with the ideal conditions for growing hemp. Additionally, hemp has more value per acre than most other crops, making many agriculturalists eager to join the global “Green Rush”.

Experts have advised the island state to legalize hemp production, use, and sale. The old adage is that it’s easier to regulate a product that’s legal than it is to completely restrict a product. Additionally, hemp production could boost the island’s agricultural and health supplement economy. Many predict that the island will be forced into a position of rapid legalization as the United States, Canada, and most of Europe gets behind a hemp-friendly market.
