Is CBD Oil Legal In Eswatini?

by in International Law September 30, 2019

The Kingdom of Eswatini, also known as just Eswatini, is a landlocked country in Southern Africa. Bordered by Mozambique to the northeast and South Africa to the north, Eswatini is one of the smallest countries in all of Africa at a mere 81 mi in width.

Referred to as “insangu” in Swazi, cannabis with high THC concentration is completely illegal in the compact country. Marijuana is widely and illicitly grown in the country and, despite the country’s small size, Eswatini has been recognized as one of the most major producers in all Southern Africa. Nigerian criminal syndicates have operationalized the trade of marijuana, sending a staggering volume of high quality hash to almost all of Europe.

Is CBD Oil Allowed In Eswatini?

In 2017, a referendum issued by the members of parliament announced that legalizing cannabis in Eswatini could add USD 1.63 billion to the economy, which would effectively triple the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Despite this economic study, neither marijuana or hemp have seen any forward progress in legality. Drug trafficking and possession come with the threat of hefty fines and lengthy prison sentences.

Although the laws are very harsh, the government has limited ability to target the criminal economies running underground. The geography of the country is incredibly diverse, boasting tropical, mountainous regions offset by lush valleys. Put simply, enforcers don’t have enough personnel to patrol through the country. Additionally, individual consumers are rarely punished while drug traffickers most often receive harsh punishment. In actuality, the country is focused on stamping out chains of distribution rather than targeting individuals.

Travelers visiting the area should remain cautious about importing CBD into the country. Even minimal amounts of THC could qualify the act as “minor drug trafficking”, which is subject to considerable punishment. Some warn that the country doesn’t allow imprisoned tourists to contact their consulates or relevant embassies. When in doubt, consumers should stick to products which contain no THC, which is the psychoactive ingredient found in hash and marijuana.

What Are The Benefits Of CBD Oil Use?

Over the past few years, researchers’ fantastic claims about the benefits of CBD use has drawn mainstream public attention. Many are turning to CBD to deal with persistent health issues in a sustainable way, causing a major disruption in traditional health markets. In almost every region that has liberalized CBD laws, opioid abuse has witnessed a moderate to sharp decline, meaning that some users have found CBD treatments to act effectively at sustainably reducing pain. CBD could be helpful for a number of conditions, including:

  • Epilepsy
  • Cluster migraines
  • Persistent pain conditions caused by inflammation, not limited to arthritis, sciatica, nerve and generalized joint pain
