Is CBD Oil Legal In Dominica?

by in International Law September 30, 2019

The Commonwealth of Dominica, otherwise known as Dominica, is an island country in the West Indies. Despite the country’s best effort to stem the flow of international drug trade, trafficking continues to have a very negative impact on the island, according to a study performed by the US Department of State.

The Dominica Police Force (DPF) estimates that over 150 kilos of high THC compounds are transited from Dominica to Venezuela per week and, worrying, this number is only increasing over time. In response, the Narcotics division has called for increased policing, better naval security, and tighter import regulations. Yet some health advocates are wondering if this is a sustainable answer to the question of international crime.

Is CBD Oil Allowed In Dominica?

High THC compounds in Dominica qualify as a Class B drug are illegal to cultivate, sell, or possess. Possession of even small amounts is punishable by a year in prison and a $20,000 fine. Supplying or production could result in as much as 14 years and half a million in drug charges. While Dominica is a very minor THC producer, it constitutes one of the most major transit routes for spreading substances throughout the West Indies.

Currently, officials have not stated much about the legality of hemp extracted CBD. It is unclear if consumers or entrepreneurs would face penalties or product seizure for selling, possessing, or distributing low THC compounds. Businesses are very hesitant to open up in Dominica because, although drug charges are less severe than other island countries, the regulations are much more likely to be enforced.

It’s recommended that consumers stick to CBD Isolate products, which are produced from industrially certified hemp and contain absolutely no THC, the illicit psychoactive substance.

Experts have recommended that legalizing hemp would be a benefit for the overburdened justice system in the island state. Other countries have demonstrated that it’s much easier to regulate a legal substance than it is to completely restrict it. Industrial hemp research and growth could provide an economic boost to revitalize the struggling agricultural economy, while also facilitating the development of labs, academic grants, and public works through high taxation.

Dominica is likely to make a statement one way or the other on their stance regarding hemp. Yet, as countries all around the world start legalizing the substance, it will be harder for officials to completely restrict hemp.
