Is CBD Oil Legal In Denmark?

by in International Law September 30, 2019

CBD, also known as cannabidiol, has breached the global health and wellness market with a bang. By 2027, it’s projected that the CBD industry will total an impressive $57 billion USD. Recent legislative changes in the United States and Canada have crept throughout the rest of the Western world, influencing the EU to allow for the open trade of hemp products.

As international lobbyists and organizations have pushed for deregulation, countries must come to terms with how they will support a safe CBD market both domestically and internationally. As one of the leading members of the EU, Denmark has a large degree of sway over international CBD policy.

Is CBD Oil Allowed In Denmark?

As of July 1st 2018, an executive order in Denmark officially allowed the production and sale of hemp based products containing strictly no more than 0.2 percent THC content. This means that CBD, which had been banned earlier under the Euphoriant Substances law, can legally be bought, sold, and produced in Denmark.

However, CBD is still classified as a medical product, meaning that any ingested or topically applied product must undergo stricter regulation than dietary supplements. The new rule does not automatically mean that every CBD product is allowed in the country. Currently, the Ministry of Health is polling neighboring nations to see how they have dealt with the legal issues surrounding CBD treatments.

Many health advocates laud Denmark’s more cautious approach to CBD, stating that the country is looking out for the consumer while trying to leave the market as open as possible. Specific governmental ministries are responsible for licensing hemp businesses, assessing active ingredients in CBD treatments, and performing random tests.

In Denmark, medical products, including CBD treatments, must go through an extra authorization process before they can legally be marketed. Depending on the ingredients in the CBD product, it will either be classified as a food product or a medical treatment.

Consumers and businesses are benefited by Denmark’s friendly legal presence. There is no shortage of well crafted, safe, and reputable CBD products that can be found in-store or online.
