Is CBD Oil Legal In Burkina Faso?

by in International Law September 27, 2019

In July of 2019, Zimbabwe sent shockwaves through the rest of Western and Northern Africa. The country, seeking to expand the economic viability of its agricultural sector, officially allowed for industrial hemp to be produced, sold, and distributed domestically. Decades earlier, the production of hemp was shut down due to the United States’ enforced trade agreements following the War on Drugs in the seventies.

Zimbabwe is following in the footsteps of South Africa, which had legalized hemp production years earlier. Experts, dubbing this phenomenon “The Green Rush”, are hopeful other African countries will soon join in when officials realize the economic and social viability of widespread hemp production.

Is CBD Oil Allowed In Burkina Faso?

Burkina Faso is a landlocked country nestled in between West Africa and surrounded by several coastal countries. Suffering from significant drought and recurring military coups, the country has very little legal backbone to enforce consistent and fair drug policies. Between the years 2009 to 2011, the legal seizure of hemp products doubled in the territory.

More than 80 percent of the country’s residents rely on traditional medical treatments to combat rising health issues. Under the homeopathic medical regime, individuals licensed through the Minister for Public Health are allowed to partake in traditional medical schemes, with some even using hemp extracts to treat persistent conditions.

Currently, there are no official qualifications required for traditional health practitioners. Government officials are very lax and there is little regulatory framework barring the use of hemp in medical cases. It would be exceedingly rare for any general consumer using CBD oil to receive any fines, legal repercussions, or jail time.

As of now, the Burkina Faso government has not made any solid response on the “Green Rush”. In the country, CBD is functionally legal, yet there are few vendors who reliably sell zero percent THC CBD oil treatments in the territory. Most consumers or travelers have to rely on international imports in order to secure reputable, safe, and high quality CBD products.

What Are The Benefits Of CBD Oil?

Researchers have studied CBD for over a decade to determine the limits of its therapeutic benefit. CBD works by interacting with the body’s natural endocannabinoid system, a network of receptors involved in nearly every aspect of health. By diminishing the body’s autoimmune inflammatory response, CBD may help target every condition from stress oxidation to arthritis. Some users report long term benefits, such as:

  • Decreased severity of seizure disorders and cluster migraines
  • Better sleep quality and longer sleep duration
  • Relaxation and increased ability to deal with stress, depression, and anxiety
  • Reduced inflammation, combating the symptoms of arthritis and nerve pain
