Is CBD Oil Legal In Albania?

by in International Law September 27, 2019

What are the laws surrounding the use of CBD oil in Albania? The answers might surprise you. For decades, Albania has traditionally been strictly against the use of anything that could even remotely be considered related to marijuana.

Since CBD oil is short for cannabidiol oil, you can probably imagine where this particular article is headed. However, things are not quite that cut and dried. In fact, the laws in Albania are somewhat ambiguous right now, making it hard for those who live there to clearly understand what they can and can’t do according to Albanian law.

Historical CBD Laws In Albania

As previously mentioned, the laws regarding CBD oil in Albania have been extremely strict until recently. In short, anything that could potentially be construed as being derived from any portion of the marijuana plant was illegal. Even though CBD oil is actually made from the hemp plant and contains no THC, the ingredient in marijuana that gets you high, it was still illegal. The best way to explain the reasoning for this is that as far as many people were concerned, the two were linked through association, as many have long believed that both marijuana and CBD oil come from the same plant.

Even though this is incorrect, it’s been a stigma that has long plagued virtually all products containing CBD oil. In Albania, the decision was made to simply outlaw everything across the board. There has traditionally been no distinction between products derived from the marijuana plant versus those made from hemp.

Potential Changes

As long ago as 2015, it looked like there would be significant changes to the laws regarding CBD oil in Albania. It was even reported that the country had struck an agreement with the United States that would allow export of an extremely rare strain of CBD oil from Albania to the US. It looked like things were changing in the country at long last. Many residents thought that since the Albanian government would be exporting cannabidiol, they would surely make it legal for use within the country itself. Four years later, virtually nothing has changed there and individuals are beginning to question the laws regarding CBD oil.

Reasons For The Current CBD Laws

Currently, there doesn’t seem to be any rush for the Albanian government to make any changes to the laws. In fact, they still seem to hold onto the idea that CBD oil should be just as illegal as cannabis. When you look at some of the more progressive parts of the world concerning the use of cannabidiol and even marijuana, you might say that Albania is the polar opposite. The truth is, they haven’t even started exporting anything to the United States, despite the agreement they made several years ago.

Unfortunately, things appear to be at a standstill in Albania right now. It’s hard to understand why they haven’t made CBD oil legal, but that doesn’t change the fact that in this country, it is still illegal. As a result, anyone caught using it is likely to be punished according to Albanian law.
