Is CBD Legal in Bahrain?

by in International Law September 27, 2019

In January of 2019, the president of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, released a statement calling for an increase of the country’s production of hemp. He had been pushed to make the claim in part due to local pressure, but also to redress past economic loss after the United States more or less forced global drug regulation in the seventies.

Between 2015 to 2018, Turkey’s cannabis exports were valued at 24,000 USD, while the import industry climbed to nearly six million USD. Turkey hopes that deregulating the hemp industry will allow them to join the quickly expanding global CBD markets. Experts are hopeful that the government’s acknowledgement of hemp will cause other Middle Eastern countries, such as Bahrain, to adopt similar policies.

Is CBD Allowed in Bahrain?

Bahrain is a comparatively more conservative country than Turkey, and that reflects in their laws and culture. The country has very strict drug offense and trafficking laws, where possession can result in jail time or, at worst, the death penalty. There is a zero tolerance attitude towards marijuana and high THC compounds. The possession of even minuscule amounts of drugs could result in four years imprisonment.

It’s imperative that any CBD consumer remain incredibly cautious. As of now, the Bahrain government hasn’t made a legal distinction between hemp and marijuana, and are unlikely to take the time to understand the difference if someone is caught in possession of cannabidiol.

If someone absolutely must travel into the country with CBD, it’s recommended that they carry a valid doctor’s prescription from their home country and a note explaining why the treatment is necessary. Additionally, the CBD should be strictly Isolate, meaning that it is industrially certified to contain no other type of cannabinoid and has strictly zero percent THC. Even if a traveler is just passing through the Bahrain airports, they could be deported or imprisoned.

Experts recommend that travelers call Bahrain officials and authorities prior to making travel arrangements in order to square away their CBD products. Anyone can get friendly advice from their nearest Bahrain embassy or consulate.

What are the Benefits of CBD?

Researchers have explored CBD for its potential role in positively benefiting users’ mental and physical health. Many users state that they are better able to engage in life, citing benefits such as:

  • Decreased depression, anxiety, and PTSD symptoms
  • Less pain from chronic physical conditions like arthritis
  • Improved skin condition, whether its reducing the signs of aging or eczema
  • Reduced seizures and migraines
