Is CBD a Superfood?

by in CBD Information October 14, 2019

Superfood is a term that’s only recently entered our collective vocabulary. Put simply, a superfood is simply a nutrient-rich food that is considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being. Dark leafy greens, antioxidant tea, greek yogurt, and berries are all considered good for supporting long term health goals.

Now, people are starting to wonder whether or not CBD could be considered a superfood. Research has shown CBD is a powerful anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, and analgesic – but just how good is the treatment for your diet?

What is CBD Made Out of?

Nowadays, legal CBD is derived from hemp. Hemp is a member of a cannabis class of plants and is defined as being highly concentrated in cannabinoids with strictly no more than 0.3 percent THC concentration. In short, it’s impossible to get high from hemp, despite how many people associate it with marijuana.

Though it’s not well known, hemp has actually been used as a highly nutritious food for thousands of years. Hemp was one of the first types of agricultural products cultivated in the Golden Crescent and other areas of the world, owing to its unique ability to make breathable fabrics, wartime composites, and act as a food source.

Depending on the extraction method used to derive CBD, CBD could contain many – if not most – of the nutritional benefits of hemp. Hemp contains essential fatty acids that aren’t naturally produced by the body and must be supplemented by a good diet.Hemp has also been found to contain high amounts of calcium, iron, magnesium, and phosphorus.

Surprisingly, hemp is one of the few plant sources that comprises a complete source of protein, providing all nine essential amino acids. The list of benefits goes on and on: minerals and vitamins, fiber, unsaturated fats, and more. Many lost cultures subsisted on hemp since it was very filling and considered reinvigorating.

Is CBD a Superfood?

While hemp is clearly nutritious, it’s not clear how many of the positive properties transfer to extract CBD tinctures, oils, and baked goods. Most CBD products, which are considered CBD Isolate, contain only one ingredient: pure CBD.

Although CBD is good for a number of health conditions, CBD Isolate products lack the terpenes, flavonoids, and minerals that truly define a superfood. If you’re interested in getting more of the benefits out of the hemp plant, consider researching reputable CBD vendors who produce legal Full Spectrum or Broad Spectrum products.

Full Spectrum products contain all of the natural components that comprise hemp in the final distilled edible, since the extraction process doesn’t specifically select from the cannabinoid CBD.
