How Does CBD Work For Depression?
Ten years ago, CBD was illegal in almost every country in the entire world. Today, that picture has changed, largely as a result of a more accurate understanding of how it works (and that it is separate from marijuana, as it lacks the same amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol, the compound in cannabis products which get someone high) and some scientific evidence which shows that CBD may help to alleviate a variety of physical and emotional problems.
As of late 2019, CBD is legal in dozens of countries, including the United States. Furthermore, the money in the industry has exploded, with revenue estimates showing that CBD is likely to generate an astonishing $22 billion by 2022.
In addition to its potential benefits for general wellness, CBD is thought to be able to address multiple issues. One such illness is depression.
How Does CBD Help Cure Depression?
CBD works by altering the way that your body’s naturally occurring endocannabinoids bond with CB1 and CB2 receptors that are found in your body. CB1 and CB2 receptors are involved in the regulation of numerous bodily symptoms, including pain, mood, sleep, appetite and more. As such, given our current understanding of the endocannabinoid system (which is still evolving – the endocannabinoid system itself was only discovered in 1992), altering your body’s endocannabinoid system has the potential to improve a variety of symptoms which are related to depression.
There is also some evidence which shows that CBD may interact with other hormones which occur in the brain. A 2014 study showed that CBD seemed to indicate positively with serotonin receptors. Serotonin is a hormone that is thought to play a key role in your body’s mood regulation.
Current Scientific Evidence
There are numerous studies which indicate that depression has the potential to help alleviate symptoms of depression. A 2014 review found that CBD had effects which were similar to those of antidepressants and anti-anxiety pills. These findings were backed up by another review, this one from 2018, which found that CBD reduced stress and depression symptoms in animal models. Another 2018 study described CBD as “fast” acting, meaning that it’s potential to provide relief from depression is relatively quick.
More research is needed before medical professionals can give clear guidelines in how CBD may help fight depression. Certainly, no one should consider replacing professional therapy or antidepressants with CBD. Many questions remain, including a more exact understanding on how CBD works, what are appropriate therapeutic doses and what are ideal strains for CBD. However, initial studies are promising, and CBD may prove to be helpful at addressing depression symptoms.
