CBD Oil for ALS

How does CBD work for ALS? This disease, also known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or Motor Neuron Disease, is a progressive neurological condition that affects people in different ways. For some, the ability to speak or even breathe is slowly reduced until it completely disappears. For many, the muscles in the legs and arms grow weaker, until that individual can no longer walk or even write their name. Unfortunately, there are no known cures for the disease.

Therefore, individuals who are diagnosed with ALS frequently linger for months or even years. Typically, it is when the muscles of the diaphragm are affected in such a way that the individual can no longer breathe that they pass away. Recently, it has been discovered that CBD oil may be effective in slowing the progression of the disease.

What Type of Information is Already Known about ALS?

It’s not yet fully understood why people contract AlS, at least in about nine out of 10 cases. For the most part, people who contract the disease are more than 50 or even 60 years of age, but that isn’t always the case. There have been individuals as young as their 30’s that have been diagnosed with ALS. It’s thought that the condition eventually develops as the result of a genetic mutation, meaning that those who develop it were likely born with an elevated risk.

Unfortunately, in roughly 10 percent of the people who develop the disease, it is considered hereditary, although it’s not yet fully understood why it seems to run in some families but not in others. People who are suffering from the disease may experience initial symptoms long before they are diagnosed. Those symptoms could seem as innocuous as muscle cramps. However, there can also be more concerning symptoms early on, not the least of which includes persistent muscle tremors. Many people that have ALS initially notice their hands shaking more than normal, although the disease can present in many different ways.

How Does CBD Work for ALS?

CBD oil may help individuals suffering from ALS or Motor Neuron Disease by supporting other bodily functions that have been adversely impacted. For instance, people who have the disease find it difficult to sleep well. They may also suffer from painful muscle cramps in addition to tremors. CBD oil is believed to help people sleep better while simultaneously relaxing the body. This means that the muscle tremors and associated pain may be reduced significantly.

However, it is the way that CBD oil interacts with the cells of the body that presents some of the most interesting research. It’s believed that by binding to endocannabinoid receptors within the body, CBD oil may be able to help keep cells healthy for longer periods of time. This is believed to be accomplished through reducing the amount of waste that cells produce as they convert nutrients into energy. Since it is thought that ALS typically develops as the result of a genetic mutation causing too much waste to build up within the cells, CBD oil could potentially help a person stave off the disease, especially if it’s taken on a daily basis.

No one wants to watch someone they love suffer with this disease. While more research needs to be done, the initial results hold a lot of promise. CBD oil may potentially be effective in preventing a person from developing ALS in the first place. Furthermore, it might be able to help those who have already been diagnosed by alleviating some of the symptoms associated with the disease.
