How Does CBD Work?
CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is one of the many active compounds that comprise both hemp and cannabis plants. Although hemp has been used by humans for thousands of years, it’s only recently that researchers have rediscovered its amazing properties. In turn this has stimulated a rush of interest in demonstrating the variegated health and wellness benefits that CBD consumption may bring.
Recent studies conducted on cannabidiol claim that CBD can positively impact a wide variety of conditions that range from arthritis to depression. In one longitudinal study, sixty four percent of seniors reported their quality of life as “good” after using CBD, up from thirty one percent prior to trying the treatment.
It’s no wonder that the CBD market is projected to hit the billions by the year 2027 – research has, time and again, touted CBD as a low-risk treatment for many debilitating conditions.
All of this begs the question: how does CBD work to improve such a wide range of different health problems?
CBD: How it Works in the Body
The body is home to a large network of receptors that are apart of the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is comprised of binding sites in the brain, immune system, and nervous system that react to different concentrations of transmitters in order to regulate diverse bodily functions. In fact, the ECS is in large part responsible for our appetite, drowsiness, pain response, mood, and reaction to stress.
After ingesting CBD, users report a gradual sense of calm and relaxation, as well as often reporting a decrease in physical pain. This is because CBD binds to receptors labelled CB-1 and CB-2 in the body.
CB-1 receptors are located in the brain and regulate mood, cognition, memory, long term planning, and other complex abstract thought processes. On the other hand, CB-2 receptors are located all throughout the rest of the body, resting in the spinal cord, immune system, and nerves in the extremities.
Unlike THC, CBD can bind with both the CB-1 and CB-2 receptors in order to create a powerful cascade of gradual benefits. Additionally, CBD can reduce the body’s habitual autoimmune inflammation. Considering that inflammation is linked to a wide variety of health conditions, it’s no surprise that CBD can mitigate many diverse issues.
Both researchers and users have claimed that CBD could positively impact conditions such as:
- Chronic pain caused by worsening inflammation, such as arthritis, sciatica, nerve pain and localized joint pain conditions
- The precursors to heart disease, including high blood pressure, elevated heart rate, and vasoconstriction
- Severe nausea and cachexia, which refers to the gradual degradation of the body due to extended periods of chronic illness
- Skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, acne, facial redness and premature signs of aging
- Restless Leg Syndrome and muscle spasms
- Insomnia and poor appetite
