CBD Popularity

Cannabidiol, or CBD for short, has exploded in popularity over the past few years. Credited with helping people with conditions as diverse as anxiety to seizures, CBD seems to have worked its way into almost everyone’s awareness, with many trying it and raving about its ability to help and heal. We will attempt to answer some of those questions in the following pages. But first, let’s find out a little more about what exactly CBD actually is.

Basics of CBD Oil

CBD is what is called a cannabinoid. There are quite a few different kinds of cannabinoids including the notorious THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, the substance in marijuana that produces the intoxication or ‘high’. Cannabinoids affect the endocannabinoid system, which is responsible for homeostasis or balance throughout the body.    All mammals have an endocannabinoid system and all mammals bodies produce their own cannabinoids to communicate and control it. Natural cannabinoids like CBD and THC (and the myriad of other cannabinoids) communicate and affect the endocannabinoid system in what seems to be beneficial ways.

Legality of CBD in The USA

In 2014 a bill was signed into law that allowed farmers to once again grow industrial hemp in the United States. This was followed by the 2018 Farm Bill that fully legalized industrial hemp and removed it from the drug schedule list in the United States, classifying it as an agricultural product instead of a controlled substance. This made hemp derived CBD products legal by default. However, many different states drafted their own laws on CBD, some legalizing it and some making it illegal again. This left CBD laws in a patchwork condition across the US.

International Legality

Each country has drafted their own laws on CBD and it is as much a patchwork internationally as it is domestically in the United States. With each country making their own laws on it, travelers should be very cautious about bringing CBD oil with them on trips. Check our international law pages here to see information about each countries attitudes towards CBD.
