CBD For College Kids: Beneficial Or Not?

It’s no secret that stress, anxiety, and depression are rising among youth attending college. According to a 2017 study, over 41.6 percent of college students were reported to suffer from anxiety, while just over a third had persistent symptoms of chronic depression. Out of those diagnosed with mental health conditions, only 20 percent sought treatment from friends, family, or through traditional medical treatments.

With incidences of anxiety and poor mood on the rise, many students have wondered whether CBD can help mitigate the most stressful aspects of college life.

What Is CBD?

CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is a naturally occurring compound that constitutes about 30 percent of the average hemp plant. Although many are scared off by its linguistic association with marijuana, CBD doesn’t actually cause the high associated with THC. In fact, it’s been found that CBD may eliminate or totally counteract psychotropic sensations from substances like marijuana.

Researchers have demonstrated that CBD can have a positive impact on a myriad of mental, physical, and emotional health problems with repeated use. By interacting with a complex network of receptors grouped under the endocannabinoid system (ECS), CBD may help the body promote homeostasis.

The ECS regulates diverse bodily functions such as appetite, digestion, drowsiness, mood, anxiety, pain response, inflammation, and the autoimmune response. CBD binds to two specific receptor sites, dubbed CB-1 and CB-2. CB-1 sites live in the brain, controlling cognition, mood, anxiety, and appetite. CB-2 receptors, on the other hand, are in the peripheral nervous system and immune system, regulating digestion, inflammation, and pain.

In this way, CBD may combat both the physical and mental effects of chronic stress, anxiety, and depression.

Can CBD Be Useful for College Students?

Perhaps the biggest worry that most first time users is if CBD will affect their brain development. Those under the age of twenty five are more susceptible to long term neural impacts due to the substances that they ingest.

Currently, no research suggests that CBD will have a negative impact on the mental development of anyone over the age of eighteen. Unlike marijuana or THC, there has been no evidence that cannabinoids like CBD cause permanent perturbations in memory, creativity, or personality.

Many young professionals and college students find CBD gentle enough to use everyday, since it promotes a calm sense of sober relaxation. CBD treatments can be used in every setting to reduce anxiety, mental fatigue, and chronic pain symptoms.

However, those suffering from long term, diagnosed mood disorders should seek a more robust treatment plan than just consuming CBD. A doctor will know best how to integrate CBD into your treatment regimen.
